The Eustachian tube is a crucial part of the ear’s ANATOMY, connecting the middle ear to the back of the throat. It is important for:
Pressure Regulation: it equalizes air pressure on either side of the eardrum. When it doesn’t work, like when flying, it can be very uncomfortable
Drainage Function: It helps drain fluid from the middle ear, reducing the risk of infections

The winter means increased environmental dryness and colds and flu and hence MORE EUSTACHIAN TUBE dysfunction.
Dysfunction Symptoms: Blockage can lead to discomfort, temporary hearing loss, and even pain, often experienced during altitude changes or head colds.

IF YOU HAVE pressure issues when flying, during a head cold, or in the winter, try these tips:
Valsalva. Gently pinch your nose and blow. You may hear crackling which is an indicator that the eustachian tube is opening
Chewing gum, sucking on a lozenge or candy (makes you swallow to open the tube)
Use a decongestant (for temporary relief only)
Stay well hydrated
use a nasal saline rinse to proactively keep the tube working well. We like the pre-mixed ones you can get over the counter at the pharmacy.
